I’m Beginning to Hate My Spam Filter

My spam filter generally does a splendid job at keeping advertisements for viagra and online gambling off my blog. But occasionally it makes annoying false positives. Axel, an occasional commenter, has to my recollection had every single one of his comments thrown to the moderation queue or spam box, initially. Now I’ve just discovered my last comment to the cumulative science thread got tagged as spam, even though I was logged in.

Now would be a good time to reiterate: if a comment of yours doesn’t appear, it’s not because I deleted it. I only delete spam. It’s because my spam filter hates you.

  1. And there is the issue with spam filters. Set them too strong, and they take yiur real mail away.. set them too weak, and you get too much spam.

In the 5 years in the antispam industry, I’d say, its safer to get spam, than to miss the email from the future wife about getting eggs for dinner!

My solution to the problem is to check my spam filters regularly. It’s very easy for me to check my Yahoo as long as I keep the browser window open, so I often open the spam box whenever I see an email there. I check my Hotmail spambox and the blog spam comments less, but still regularly enough to spot any ham within 24 hours or so.
